THE MIND COACH INITIATIVE

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” – Frederick Douglass

Mental Health is an essential part of a child’s overall health. Untreated mental health conditions can affect healthful transition into adulthood. According to statistics provided by the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is the third leading cause of death in youth ages 10-24. 90% of those who died by suicide had an underlying mental illness.

Students have the weight of academic, social, and economic pressure. In addition, the rise of social media can compound anxiety, depression, and bullying. Schools can provide a unique opportunity to identify and treat mental health conditions by serving students where they already are.

Our initiative aims to:

1)    Advocate for therapy with mental health professionals at no cost to students

2)    Promote the utilization of the Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC) each semester to identify early warning signs of an emerging mental health condition and provide the necessary support

What is the Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC)?

The Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC) is a brief screening questionnaire (17 questions) that is used by Pediatricians and health professionals to improve the recognition of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral problems in children ages 4 to 17 years so that appropriate interventions can be initiated as early as possible.
